Winter Wonderland Washington D.C.

22 inches of snow in D.C? The word etched everywhere in everyone's minds was SnOMG! and it was found all over the nation's capitol. Now, given that I'm from the coasts of the Golden State of California, snow and I aren't well acquainted to begin with- let alone a snowstorm that shuts down a city.

Walking in a winter wonderland was a song, never a reality and so it was as we walked out our door in Georgetown today- everything covered in white, pedestrians taking over the roads, cars blanketed in snow and going nowhere, flurries aflutter and yet Obama still had speeches to make...

Headed to Dupont Circle to catch the red line metro, on a mission to see the frescoes atop the Library of Congress (fingers crossed that they wouldn't be closed).

But first thing's first on a wintery day, a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do- catch snowflakes!

The stairs were closed off with yellow cautionary tape but I just followed the plowers to the basement entrance hoping, hopping, slipping and sliding in my cowboy boots. The doors were locked but I turned to see this image and was grateful to be there any way.

The building was ominous and exuding such a sovereign strength in the snow, I felt a deep peace standing at its base and I took a reprieve from the increasing snow dust.

We trudged on, sinking into the deep snow paths making our way to The Mall, as it's called, to find the sights of the Washington Monument, the Smithsonian buildings, the Capitol Building and the White House.

Women on skis, dogs in sweaters running sans leash, kids throwing snowballs and packs of people with make-shift tupperware lid sleds were everywhere!
The sight to be seen were the sledders and snowmen builders on the lawn of the Capitol Building, which had the biggest slant to sled.

I walked, literally, down Pennsylvania Avenue for miles, colder than cold but smiling at the rare treat- this had only been possible in December 2009 and 1922! Where's my horse & buggy now!?

My boots soaked up the sludge and I stopped being able to feel them, so shortly after this moment (and being rushed past the White House by security, again!!, we headed home for a warm up. My speech was beginning to slur and the ice was hardening into a harder tread to trek. About an hour later we made it to the subway entrance at the Smithsonian where I was just two weeks earlier....
Check out the difference from the image from early January here and the video at the same spot today:

Finally, we arrived back where we started six hours prior to a sunset sky! The snowfall had stopped and the skies cleared, the light at the end of the storm, ended our day in a snowed D.C.

But wait, there's one last sweet order of the day in! After my toes thawed, I decided it was time for gelato, because no matter how cold I am my heart will warm at the idea of Italian, well anything. Thank god for Griffin Market keeping open and stocking Vanilla Bean Gelato!!!

Three scoops are my three cheers for my magical, once-in-a-lifetime-day in D.C. What a wonderful send-off!

Off to curl up watching Groundhog Day, it's a doozy and then off to Charleston, South Carolina tomorrow when the streets open up. Ta-ta for now!

Singing to Tom a Special Little Song

All right...

So first things first, for most of you it may come as a surprise that songs come out of my mouth every once in awhile and they sound fairly decent. I'm holding my breath a little bit as I look at the "publish post" button below this post entry... but you know what- I'm gonna share this even in spite of my timidity, honesty is sexy and even better when it's raw and real as my friend, Sierra Sullivan says.

This past summer, I sang in super public at my mom's wedding at her maid of honor (I had to bring in the big guns for my toast, ya know?!).

Well, there's a particular song that lingers in my heart and I sang it yesterday evening when I touched down in D.C. for round two of the Game of Awesome...

Given that I'm a tad shy when it comes to certain things, I asked the guards on duty if I could break the respectful "requested/required" silence and sing. Half hoping they'd say no, I was surprised that they enthusiastically replied- OF COURSE!

Well, I smirked and smiled and sang for Tom and his words of wisdom that echo in the Jefferson Memorial. My partner in crime and now, official videographer, David captured it for your viewing/listening pleasure....

This song came to me via a beautiful friend, Liz Fullerton, on our journey through the Sacred Valley of Peru and I am forever grateful for its sweet and simple truth.

Somos Uno Con El Universo (We Are One With The Universe)

somos uno con el universo
siempre para siempre siempre

somos uno con el universo
siempre para siempre siempre

tierra mi cuerpo
agua mi sangre
aire mi alimento
y fuego mi espiritu

(english)
We are one with the universe
always for always always

land is my body
water my blood
air my nourishment
and fire my spirit

You Can Always Get What You Want

and if you try sometimes, you'll get more than you need!

The end of 2009 sparkled and dazzled itself on my sunwarmed face in gorgeous Bahia... and on my last day in Brazil, I looked over my itinerary with TAM and United Airlines only to find myself grunting at the 24 hour travel plan ahead of me.

"Ugh... 24 hours of travel in and out of airplanes?"

However, as I made little grunting noises and sipped on coconut water, I thought to myself- "what if I made this into a game of awesome?"

Game of Awesome? Yes, Game of Awesome. I'll explain...
I thought about how I could perceive this 24 hour situation as a good thing, and not just good but friggin' awesome! So, low and behold I noted that I had a 6 hour layover in Washington, D.C. Hmmm, I have always wanted to see my nation's capitol! I could take a cab and just go with it ... and wait, maybe a friend of a friend could meet up with me.

I got started and updated my facebook status with a plea for an adventure in D.C. and asked if anyone knew anyone that would be up for one. Lincoln, Washington, and Jefferson- here comes an Ella!

I landed in D.C. two hours late, leaving me now only 4 hours to get through customs, find a place to stow my bag, and get a roundtrip cab in rush hour traffic. Hmmm, not so awesome but looking and listening around the terminal I figured out an even better plan.
Snow storms and late arrivals had left many a passenger in limbo and people were itching to get on stand-by. I offered up my ticket and United spotted me with not only a complimentary flight out on the following day but a roundtrip voucher within the U.S. that was valid for one year, a grand hotel stay and a meal voucher. Pretty friggin' awesome!

Bonus- a friend facebooked me with a contact in D.C. at this point. (Thanks Andrea!!)
Within 20 minutes I had a new friend coming to pick me up at the airport with a bevy of winter garb for all I had were sun dresses and tank tops from Brazil. Boy, was I grateful that I wore my leggins and a longsleeve shirt on the plane.

So, all in all, the game of awesome was so ON! Mr. David Ley, my newfound friend and tourguide, turned about to be one of the coolest and sweetest people I've met. Three cheers for trust, surrender and flippin' your perspective to "how awesome can I make my life?"
We tooled around D.C. for the day and had a great time snacking, snapping photos (David of DC/Sedona is a photographer extraordinaire) and scampering about town.

To say I had my way with D.C. (and a friggin' blast) would be an understatement!

On my way out, I decided to throw my little snowhat in the ring once again...

"Hey David, when you leaving D.C.?"
"First week of February I'm heading back to Sedona in my truck."

Wow, I've always wanted to drive cross country and check out Sedona to boot...

Hmmmm wheels are turning and yes, I landed back in D.C. today.
It's amazing to look back at exactly a month ago at this moment and realize that with a tweaking of my perspective, my whole month changed into this realm of possibility, of trust, of complete joy, of wonder!

I'm embracing my choice that has just led to a thousand more exciting and fresh choices... keeping this up and my face may begin to hurt from all my smiling.

This month is dedicated to opening and asking for what we want and knowing without a shadow of a doubt that we create our experience.

Here I come U.S.A. - ready for round two of the game of awesome????

Game on!

Welcome to Life Ella Mode.....

Stay tuned as D.C. gets snowed in, I'll be setting sail for Charleston along
the Atlantic Coast soon.
